AppleApple isn’t pleased that a group of domain names that include the word “iPhone” redirect to porn sites. The company filed a complaint with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) on Thursday, according to Domain Name Wire, in order to get the redirects shut down. Among the list of seven domain names Apple is targeting is “iPhone4S.com,” which poses a potential image problem for Apple and its customers.

The other names in the list, which include titles like “iphonesex4s.com,” don’t really try to confuse possible visitors about their intent, but the innocuous iPhone4S.com, which was registered back in 2008, could easily be typed in by innocent potential customers looking for information on Apple’s latest smartphone. The others are merely guilty by association, but that one could actually be damaging to Apple’s own public perception.

Resolution of domain name disputes under WIPO applies internationally, and its dispute resolution procedures are streamlined compared to litigation and often conclude within just a couple of months. Apple can either have the domain names in question transferred or have them canceled altogether if WIPO finds in its favor.
