K- at first (when iCloud was available) I got some of it to work.
It is important for me because I move around and need these files at any moment.
about 2 weeks ago I am in a meeting with upper management and I need my file. NOT THERE
I call apple and they walk me through some steps (delete the iCloud account, add it back in on my iPad/iPhone). Nothing works
so i played with it a little and come to find out that unless I shut OFF documents & data on both my devices, the apps (numbers, keynote, pages) will not upload the files. I know: WEIRD. but i worked and I needed the files, so i went with it. never questioned it.
yesterday I get home and there was another update for iTunes. I read it quickly but it had something to do with documents & data. My thoughts: finally, they recognized there is an issue and fixed it.
Come to find out, it wiped all files from my devices- but the files still on iCloud.
I called apple and was VERY frustrated. The poor guy recognized that after these past 2 weeks, I ended up knowing more than what the simple instructions on his screen were recommending. Finally he put me in touch with a manager, who after 5 minutes is escalating the call to one of the iClouds experts. They will call me on Tuesday or Wednesday (the manager gave me his direct number)

Spot on. I was definitely looking forward to this feature the most. I’m currently writing a dissertation and was really looking forward to being able to add thoughts whenever I was away from my desk, and not worry about saving it through all the sandboxing that occurs. I’ll continue to use Dropbox though, as this is the most reliable… and only method currently working.

I checked Apple’s website for its information on iCloud’s Docs in the Cloud feature, and even they admit that you have to go through iCloud.com to get your documents onto your computer:
“Just sign in to icloud.com/iwork in any modern web browser, and all your iWork for iOS documents will be there — complete with your most recent edits. Click a document to download it in iWork ’09, Microsoft Office, or PDF format.”

Get this fixed, Apple, and iCloud will be a killer app. Contacts, calendar, and safari bookmarks all work perfectly, as well as Mail, but that’s just an IMAP account, nothing new there.

When it comes to the web Apple is just a massive failure, I really don’t get it. Full transparency here, I run an business that is 100% OSX and iOS devices, we love Apple, but we make every effort to stay away from anything that deals with sharing online with them.

Hi…not sure if it is relevant at this point, but it looks like Apple has something more sophisticated in the works for document access, sharing and collaboration called iWork.com-beta. For now, it seems to be a place to put your docs on-line for viewing, markup and collaboration. Guessing in the future, it will be more integrated with iCloud.

Yes, it does. Just make sure you make your Library folder visible first. Please stop crying about it: all files are fysically in the directory Y mentions.
I really don’t understand all the disappointment. iCloud does exactly what was said it would.

Great review. I have a question. Did anybody noticed that the Mobile folder on a mac keeps an exact replica of the files on the cloud, no matter if you tell either Keynote, Pages or Numbers to store the file there? I am a bit troubled, wasn’t this supposed to be “on the cloud”

Thanks for the article. iCloud is by far the most disappointing roll out by Apple. You would think idisc functionality would be replicated in iCloud.
Going to drop box.. never looking back. If this is the mark of the beginning of the “post-Steve Jobs” era, I’m not looking forward to the years to come.

It’s actually very easy to transfer files in GoodReader via iCloud. There is a folder called “icloud” on top of the file list in GoodReader, say for instance, on my iPad. I copy the documents that I want to transfer into this folder. Then, on a different iOS device, say my iphone, I open GoodReader, select the files, and download (select >> because the download option is on the second menu page). That’s it.

I absolutely agree with your post. I thought I had done something wrong and I have been searching the settings. I also discovered that a movie I stored in the cloud from GoodReader if deleted from the cloud using the Mac iCloud management controls in OS X preferences immediately gets deleted from GoodReader which is not what I wanted.

IMHO (Mac Book Pro + iCloud) + (iPad + iCloud) = iCloud (FAIL)

Not sure if it’s just server overload but the Docs sync just NOT working today at all… I’ve got different quantities of docs in every iWork app on my iPads and iPhone.
