Apple officially began taking pre-orders for the iPhone 4S via its online store at 12:01 a.m. PDT (3:01 a.m. EDT) on Friday morning. Users eligible for an upgrade can place their order now, and shipments will begin arriving at customer doorsteps next Friday, Oct. 14.

Apple officially began taking pre-orders for the iPhone 4S via its online store at around 12:45 a.m. PDT (3:45 a.m. EDT) on Friday morning. Users eligible for an upgrade can place their order now, and shipments will begin arriving at customer doorsteps next Friday, Oct. 14. Pre-orders are began earlier at around 12 a.m. PDT at Sprint, and Verizon‘s online stores, while AT&T lagged behind, and still hadn’t begun offering orders as of this writing.

The iPhone 4S is available in 16, 32 and 64 GB capacities in either white or black, for $199, $299 or $399 respectively on contract when you sign up for a new, two-year agreement in the U.S. It’s also available unlocked direct from Apple in some countries, like Canada, beginning at $649. An unlocked version will be available in the U.S. beginning in November.

The 4S improves on its predecessor with a dual-core A5 processor, dual-core graphics processing, a new dual-mode (GSM and CDMA) antenna that can reach up to 14.4 Mbps on HSDPA networks, and an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera with improved sensor technology and full, 1080p HD video capture.

Maybe the most significant improvement from an end-user perspective is the addition of Siri, Apple’s voice-activated personal digital assistant, which can do things like set appointments, compose text messages and check the weather, all in response to natural language queries like “Will I need my raincoat this weekend?” The iPhone 4S also comes with iOS 5, Apple’s latest mobile operating system software, preinstalled. The new operating system will be available for other eligible device owners Oct. 12.

Let us know if you decided to pre-order the iPhone 4S, and if so, what you’re looking forward to most about it.

  1. am stuck in the middle or ordering….its taking ages!!!

  2. yeah… except they still need to talk to att servers… which are not getting through

  3. Filipe Fernandes Friday, October 7, 2011

    wow it doesnt work

  4. It keeps giving an error when talking to AT&T to check eligibility. This sucks.

  5. Casey Sardoss Friday, October 7, 2011

    The ATT servers suck!

  6. AT&T and Apple Store FAIL.

  7. I’m looking forward to actually getting an order complete on the apple website or being about to actually get through to a person on the apple phone line

  8. my order wont go through, and i’m getting upset. but i’m definitely looking forward to the iphone 4S! it’s going to be my first smartphone, and i know i will love it!

  9. Apple store app also didn’t begin working until 12:45am, and I have yet to be able to order from there as I keep getting error messages. Now would be a good time to switch to Verizon as their website was lighting fast and ready to accept orders… Does this also speak to their quality of service??? Guess I won’t know until I can take off the ATT contract handcuffs!!!

has anyone bought the iphone for pickup…or is it just delivery.

    1. If you pre-ordered it on the network’s site, you’ll get it delivered on Oct. 14th or Oct. 15th. If you pre-ordered from Apple.com you can choose to stand in line and experience the longest line of your life OR have it shipped to you. but you have to setit up yourself whereas if you get it from the network’s site, they set it up for you so you can just use it right out of the box. I just finished pre-ordering mine from the network’s site btw. Hope that helped :D

  11. Been trying for a half hour, can’t get past the eligibility check

  12. at least im not the only one…really at&t?? AGAIN? awful

  13. Filipe Fernandes Friday, October 7, 2011

someone have an alternative for AT&T

    1. great! “We’re sorry, but there was an error processing your request. Please try again later.”

    2. Try the Att site I ordered 2

  14. are they sold out or something? cause its straight up not working and i want ittttt

  15. well i ordered through At&T, i dont know if it went through. I ordered the phone a second time through at&t on same upgrade so does that mean i’m getting 2 iphones on 1 upgrade? wishful thinking but come on whats going on with At&t

  16. Finally got it ordered. 1 hour and 37 minutes after they were supposed to be available.

First Apple is almost an hour late. Then they won’t accept “new customers”. Sprint finally comes online and after very slow navigation Amex fraud protection kicks in.

Not exactly what you’d call smooth.

  17. well at&t is lagging or something, i think i just ordered 2 iphone 4gs’s using the same upgrade on my plan… i wonder if they will bill be twice and send me 2 iphones haha. you would think they would void the second upgrade

  18. preordered through ATT’s store at about 4a ET, went straight through with no hicups. Didn’t seem to work through the Apple Store option though.

  19. AT&T is F*#&ING GARBAGE!!!! was on the phone with them for an hour and twenty minutes, an automated voice came on and said they couldn’t answer my phone call at this time and to call back later… called back and have noe been on the phone with them for 29 minutes…. AND their website is a joke… I have a business account and can’t order anywhere but AT&T or via phone… Fucked myself on this one I guess?

  20. Site is soo bogged down. Trying to pre-order and get this: “We are currently experiencing high volumes of iPhone orders and may require up to 1 minutes to access your AT&T account information. In order to maintain the priority of your order, please remain on this page.”

  21. Log into your AT&T account first, then select the upgrade feature within your account. After numerous failed attempts from the home screen, this worked for me. But say goodbye to your grand fathered data unlimited plan…

  22. ATT is pissing me off.

  23. Oh this is just too much, aHhH!! I just want 1 iPhone pwease :@(. “We are temporarily unable to take iPhone orders. We apologize for this inconvenience. Please try again later.”

    1. Try logging into your AT&T account first. Worked like a charm for me.

  24. i cant order it wtf at&t

  25. Copped 2 bitches. AT&T

  26. And dead, after a whopping 49 minutes of order taking. Nicely done Apple.

  27. apple and at&t did not think this through.

  28. this att site is f***ed up…It never works..Trying for last 1.5 hours both in apple.com and att.com

  29. Now they aren’t taking iphone orders on the apple web site

  30. I just got through. It didn’t ask for anything beyond my Apple ID, and they said they’d send me an email when it’s time to complete my order. I think someone’s servers crashed (anyone think it isn’t AT&T?), so they’re just handing out reserve numbers until they get things sorted out.

  31. Jason Sawtelle Friday, October 7, 2011

    Just got thru! 4:55am ET

  32. “We are temporarily unable to take iPhone orders. We apologize for this inconvenience. Please try again later.” does this mean the preorder is done? No more iPhones

  33. Go to at&t’s webpage, your having problems cause you’ll need to change your data plan over to an iPhone 4S plan

  34. Anders Isaksen Friday, October 7, 2011

well apple store is working great now… to bad they never had it going at 12:01 like promised

  35. Couldn’t get an order thru apple.com but amazingly att.com took my order, quickly at that. Surprised.

  36. I ordered thru the ATT website — no glitches whatsoever, the order went thru immediately.

  37. Just got my Iphone 4s RESERVED! Took me 30 mins!…YEAH

  38. Verizon was a breeze. I logged on around 3:10 EST.

  39. WOOT! took a while for AT&T but I got my order in after trying for and hour and a half! Typical

  40. Works now. I have AT&T and was able to submit my order via the apple store app. Could not specify that I wanted store pick up though…

  41. Finally preordered my iPhone 4s by 1:55 am on my iPad app after several attempts. Both apple.com and AT&T.com were having trouble. Got the same error messages as others did. It didn’t give me the option for pick up. So, I’ll be at my doorstep, eagerly awaiting my new phone!

  42. How do I pre-order 2 phones on family plan? Let me order one, and says the other not eligible!

  43. Actually, I placed my order on the AT &T site, as both the Apple website and app kept on giving me error messages. What is up with Apple?!

  44. No chance, no chance, no chance of waisting my money on tHat slight upgrade.

  45. Fernando Miralles-Wilhelm Friday, October 7, 2011

I was thinking of ordering it until I saw the sticker price for us AT&T customers with still some time on our contract. $649 for the 16GB model (which means a $450 “upgrade” premium). I don’t understand that business model. Why not let us upgrade at the going price, and just renew the 2-yr contract starting now?

  46. Do it on the phone, it works there. They may have a separate site.

  47. Can wait to get my new inproved engine,4 my. 4s,

  48. I was up last night about 3:00am ET to place my order, but AT&T never worked and Apple didn’t get things ready for another 45 minutes. I received a reservation notice telling me it couldn’t confirm my status with AT&T. A while later, another e-mail arrived and I completed the order online without any issues.

I have an iPhone 3Gs and it’s ready for an upgrade. My primary motivation was more storage capacity for media. Since my old contract with AT&T is up months ago, I was eligible for the full upgrade credit.

It seems silly to wake up in the middle of the night, but I just wanted to get this behind me. Next week, I’ll have my upgraded phone. Surprisingly, the dock I ordered with it won’t ship for another week after that.

  49. I pre-ordered the iPhone 4S for my wife via Sprint. It’s replacing her Blackberry 9630 (Tour), which she has had to have replaced 4 times in the past 2 years. I’m excited to get her onto the iOS platform with her phone (we each have our own Macs and an iPad and iPad 2 between us) and see how it improves her ability to get more things done. I’m also very interested to see how the iPhone 4S performs on Sprint’s network. I left Sprint to get the iPhone 3GS in 2009 and might consider coming back if my wife’s experience with the iPhone on Sprint is a good one. But I’ll most likely hold out until the next model rolls out and my contract with AT&T expires.

  50. Success at 2:40am PDT. The cure for what has been dubbed the “Apple Hangover” from staying up into the weeeee hours of the night will arrive on my doorstep October 14th!

  51. i think it would be nice to rename the new phone

    IPhone 4 Steve

  52. i think we should rename this IPhone to
    IPhone 4 Steve

seems to be so much better than the 4
