It might be me, but am I the only one considering NFC a two-way street?

What it is explained for now - except by Bob Ofenstein - is that you pay with it, not receive with it...

In my opinion, small consumer payments will explode when sharing goods and services will be 'traded' more and more often. Eventually, we will get rid of the old fashioned PIN-authorization. Why not swipe a signiture, put in a fingerprint, or scan your eye with your camera before/after every transaction.

Do you want some endless possibilities? Checkins with foursquare and other marketing tools immediately transfer into "hard" cash on your mobile device.

And now let go of the idea that NFC only 'holds' money:

Say goodbye to all your special giftcards, coupons, loyalty cards and other plastic contained in your wallet or stuck on the clipboard at home that (is supposed to) save(s) you money.

It is all there, together.

The minimum NFC can do for Square is to enhance consumer & merchant experience by not having to swipe the card minimum 10 times for it to read with their little “toy” card reader…

I was an early fan of PayPass, arguably the best-known NFC payment platform among retailers, but it is amazing that it has been adopted by so few merchants during the last ten years. NFC is basically a replacement for a card swipe with little other upside, but a whole lot of downside in the form of its inherently unsecure nature. With Congress and the FTC cracking down on companies that inadvertently leak confidential buyer information, most merchants have ample reasons to skip NFC for now.

To Tom F.: You say that "Visa/MC should be afraid because NFC will change "the old business models". Recent headlines say that Verizon, ATT, T-mobile and Visa/MC are investing $100M+ in NFC payment. In my opinion, that would only happen if they are planning on making NFC an X% per transaction payment channel. Just like the WHO song... "meet the new boss, same as the old boss".

I don't think "I’ve never met a single merchant in the U.S. who says I want this NFC thing" imply to "There’s no value in NFC" is strong enough. At least, there is a card adopted NFC technique called "EasyCard" ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EasyCard ), which has been used widely in every person living Taipei. People use it to commute with subway, taxi, bus... and it even can buy anything in 7-11 or pay for parking. And we all looking forward if EasyCard can integrated into smart phones. Ask people lived in Taipei if they can imagine there is no EasyCard in their lives. I bet the answer is negative.
