Time Inc. (NYSE: TWX) is expanding its magazines’ presence on the Nook Newsstand. Starting today, print subscribers to Fortune, People, Sports Illustrated, and Time will be able to read the Nook editions of those magazines for free (as they can on the iPad and other tablets). Time Inc. plans to make the rest of its 21 U.S. magazines available through Nook Color by the end of the year.

The Time Inc. announcement comes as part of a Nook Color software update, which users can download today. In addition to the Time Inc. titles added, Meredith (NYSE: MDP) magazines Parents and Fitness are also now available. Those new magazines, Nook says, are specially formatted for the Nook Color and contain “fun extras” like video and audio podcasts, animations, quizzes, how-tos and photo galleries. Also included in the upgrade are “much-requested” parental controls to turn off the web browser.

With the new titles, the Nook Newsstand now carries 172 magazines.

As we reported earlier this month, Time Inc. plans to release tablet editions (in addition to the Nook Color editions) of all its magazines by the end of 2011, with InStyle, Real Simple and Entertainment Weekly most likely up next.
