We agree whole heartedly! Check out www.energysage.com, the web site we're building to address this very problem. One of the biggest stumbling blocks to accelerating adoption of clean energy is a lack of clear, objective, unbiased advice. EnergySage provides information and actionable advice about appropriate clean energy options and it is the only resource that will allow consumers to simultaneously evaluate all of the available options. Also, we are creating a clean energy community so that consumers can have access to first-hand experience from local clean energy system owners. We haven't launched yet, but we welcome your and your readers' feedback.

Most solar panels degrade in effectiveness by a few percent per year. When combined with the increased effectiveness due ti improved technology in most new panels coupled with low pricing for new panels due to a current global glut of panels on the market, it is safe to say that used panels have very little value at all at this time. This may have something to do with the lack of a "Blue Book" for old solar panels.

This is an excellent start for momentum needed to standardize metrics for Green products. Another needed change is standardizing how green consumer electronics are rated to be:

Sounds like a good opportunity for GigaOm to expand their publishing empire. By monitoring the auctions on ebay and the asks on Craigslist, you could start to aggregate the prices together to form an index of sorts, after a while you'd have enough pricing information on individual models that you could start to get more specific. If you need any volunteers for testing, my roof is open ;)

Great article! We do need some way to accurately price used systems. One of the reasons I developed POWERSHED was to avoid having to leave your solar PV system behind when you move. You can take POWERSHED with you so you can continue to receive a return on your initial investment. Feel free to check out POWERSHED at http://www.powershed.com.
