Interactions with automated, self-service applications can always benefit by using an interface modality that is easier, faster, more personalized, and less error prone. In this case, voice commands can fill the bill if done properly.

While hands-free commands are necessary in certain situations, e.g., driving a car, it is an option that the individual user should be able to selectively choose, depending on the circumstances and the devices involved. That is a key concept behind "unified communications" (UC), but is applicable to operational function. So, there is obviously good potential for speech commands as one alternative to other forms of input and control of mobile apps that are already exploding the consumer market.

Ryan,
Great to see you continuing to give good coverage to this space. Literally this morning, we at iSpeech (www.ispeech.org) announced free SDKs for iOS, Android and Blackberry developers to speech enable their own apps. Would love to tell you more about how we're disrupting this space.
