Time Warner’s HBO Go service has been a big hit, and it’s helping to drive more viewers to the premium cable network. Building on that success, CEO Jeff Bewkes said on the company’s earnings call Wednesday morning that HBO’s TV Everywhere service would soon be available not just to web browsers and mobile devices, but on connected TVs and video game consoles.

The premium cable network initially rolled out a browser-based version of its HBO Go service in early 2010. Since then, HBO Go has expanded the amount of content available through the service, including every episode of every HBO original series. It’s also expanded availability of the service, releasing mobile apps for the iPhone, iPad and Android devices.

The mobile apps have been very successful so far, with Bewkes reporting that those apps have been downloaded more than 4 million times since their launch. And according to Bewkes, Time Warner’s research shows that HBO Go users watch even more of the network’s content than those who don’t take advantage of the service.

With that in mind, HBO is looking to extend the service to even more devices, Bewkes said. By including connected TVs and game consoles, HBO is following similar initiatives announced by Time Warner Cable and Comcast to build their own branded TV apps for customers to watch streaming programming. But with mobile apps and connected TV apps, HBO is positioned better than most other programmers in making its content available on those devices.

I’m hoping it gets added to the Apple TV at some point.

  2. HBO Go isn’t available for Time Warner Cable customers yet! Where did you get that part from?

    1. @Dude1 – Sorry for the confusion. I didn’t mean to imply that HBO Go would be available through Time Warner Cable’s TV app, only that HBO isn’t alone in building TV apps for connected devices.

  3. Ryan, it’s not that HBO isn’t available on the Time Warner app. The HBO Go app doesn’t work on the Time Warner cable system at all.

    1. Drew – Sure, I’m aware that HBO Go isn’t available to Time Warner Cable customers. There was some confusion with the initial story text, which Dude took to mean that I was implying that HBO Go is available through Time Warner Cable applications.

Ryan, any word as to whether it will be available to Canadians or are we going to have to wait forever like we did for Netflix?

    1. @Michael – Bewkes talked about international expansion for HBO Go, but didn’t mention Canada: “Go is now available throughout Central Europe, we’ll launch Brazil and Mexico towards the end of the year, and we’ll start to launch in Asia next year,” he said.

      1. Yes, I’m sure that Brazilians and Mexicans will welcome a hugely overpriced middleman between them and their content-creators…

  5. If it’s only available as a paid subscriber of HBO as part of a cable TV package, then it’s worth as much to me as the ESPN “ocho” package on XBox Live…that is to say, nothing.

  6. Will HBO Go ever be available via subscription on mobile devices and connected TVs, without needing a cable subscription? I gave up cable about 6 months ago and switched to Hulu Plus and Netflix…and doubt I will ever go back. Love HBO, but not enough to pay $80 for all the other crap. Thx!

  7. HELL yea!

Well lets hope they don’t over Price the monthly Fee, $5 to $10 Bucks at Months sounds Great… Netfix still Kick ass tho..

  9. I would love to see HBO Go become available as a separate subscription as the cable package. I bet a lot of people that don’t have cable would go for this. HBO would make even more money. It’s a smart idea. I am one of many that agrees with this.

  10. HBO GO is not available on CABLEVISION.

  11. I am trying to watch a program that is available on HBO go and not on the “on demand” function on actual HBO. I played HBO go on my iphone and hooked it to the TV, all the TV shows is “HBOgo” and the sound comes through the TV. My Iphone cord works for everything else (Netflix, hulu etc) perfectly. Is there some block on HBO go that prevents you from watching it on a TV?

  12. just tried app on my smart phone droid..but optimum isn`t on the list what the heck.dumped directv for triple play in july /11

  13. Any updates on this? I am a comcast customer and would love to set this up on my internet connected TV.
