Actually, most firms are just collecting resumes. Nobody’s actually pulling the trigger on hiring yet. Everybody’s waiting for the economy to get better.

The salaries seem low for the level of education, training, and hours of work. I live in Danville, CA and the above salaries are not enough to purchase a home in my town. Do most of these engineers rent?

The perks are not for hiring but to “force” relocation to Silicon Valley. The ultimate irony of innovative web tech companies is that they refuse to manage their work forces using the internet and results-only work environments (see gorowe.com).
