The user generated news space has taken off in Europe too, we've been working with the biggest news outlets in France for over five years now, providing them online platforms and mobile applications to turn their basic tip lines into full-on news sharing communities. Funny that the US is finally catching on ;)
Check us out, Citizenside.com.

We're also the agency that broke that amateur video that got John Galliano fired from Dior, and just got him convicted of anti-antisemitism in French courts today.

Interesting article Mathew. I agree, this is definitely an experiment worth watching. As you’ve written before, and we’ve commented, it is great to see traditional journalism embracing social media and applying the social data to be able to report more timely, accurate and desired information. You do raise a good question though – will users want to share with TapIn, the San Jose Mercury News, and other newspapers, or will they simply resort to their tried and true habits of posting to Facebook and Twitter? This is an industry that has a lot of potential, but its success ultimately lies in the hands of the users.

Tackable's features are great because it truly engages the users. In an article entitled, "Mobile apps for news: Do something!", author Amy Gahran said that one thing is obvious about smartphone users: they like to DO stuff (read more about her insights at http://crowdsourcing.org/l/2088). Thus, Tackable is one mobile app to look forward to when it fully launches!
