Convos, a group communication tool that I covered back in 2009 , has notified its customers by email that it will be shutting down as of June 30, 2011.

Our growth has been steady, and we’ve definitely had our share of growing pains. However, we have not been able to gain enough traction in the market to sustain long term operations. . . . Access to Convos services and your groups will be unavailable on the cutoff date, so please be sure to download any files and photos that you need, along with an exported member list.

As I said in my original post, “Convos occupies a middle ground between basic group communication systems like listservs and Google Groups, and full-fledged project management apps.” Organizations that have been using Convos have several alternatives, although none of them have the exact feature set that Convos does. If you don’t need Convos’ project management features, here are some other group communications options to consider:

Of course, you may also want to look at Google Groups, Yahoo Groups, listservs, and Facebook Groups, which were recently upgraded.
