Through IMessage.GetProps with PR_SUBJECT receiving text messages.
How do I know the recipient’s phone number?

You are absolutely right on point 1 and 2. Point 3 would be against net neutrality, and too complex technically.

What is worrying is the trend. When in a few years, Apple Facetime/iMessage, Google Voice and Skype reach interconnect agreements, what is going to avoid that telcos become just data pipes?

Interestingly my SMS charges came down to exact 0€ after services like PingChat and WhatsApp started (although these are 3rd party apps).

Inclusion/Merge of iMessage in the iOS is exactly the opposite of waste! You’d better start reading about the backgrounds of iMessage NOW….

SMS isn’t value add. In most countries people put up with the fussyness of typing out an SMS, because it is cheaper than a phone call. I the US, it is fussy and costs more. Bizarre.
