Summary:

Hulu charges its users $8 per month to watch videos on the PS3. Bay Area–based ORB Networks is starting to ship a Blu-ray disc this week that makes it possible to watch Hulu content on the PS3 for free. Check out our video review.

ORB BR is a new $20 Blu-ray disc that makes it possible to watch free content from Hulu as well as other local and online video on your PS3. ORB is also working on a version of its software that will bring all of this content to any BD Live–enabled Blu-ray player. The PS3 version is shipping this week. Check out this week’s episode of Cord Cutters for a first preview:

Show notes for this episode:

  • ORB BR for PS3 can be ordered online for $20. A disc for other Blu-ray players is scheduled to be available in early July.
  • ORB Networks has been developing its media server software for a number of years. The company came out with a line of media streamers last year, which includes a $69 $79 music player and a $99 video player.
  • Check out our interview with ORB CEO Joe Costello here.
  • Want to watch Hulu videos in HD on your PS3? Then ORB BR won’t help you: Free Hulu videos only stream up to 480p max. However, Hulu Plus streams up to 720p HD, and it’s available on the PS3.

  1. Orb MP1 is $79 and not $69.

    1. Thanks for pointing that out, I’ll correct it right away.

Wow this is a very exciting new product. I would really like to know if it provides streaming content in HD?

    1. Up to 720p. But of course it depends on the source material. Free Hulu streams are 480p max.

    2. It works well if you have a good server. Limited for stereo now but will update to DD 5.1 soon. Full review here:

  3. Does ORB have a deal with Hulu for this? If not, won’t Hulu just block it like they do the Boxee Box? If Hulu wanted their free content available on the PS3, it would be there already… right?

Don’t get me wrong – I want this to work!

  4. I love these alternatives to the PS3’s Hulu Plus. I’ve been using PlayOn streaming from my PC to my PS3 for a few years now, pretty similar to Orb too :) It has a ton of pre-installed channels, as well as a big community developing more channels for additional sites’ video/music content :)
