Nick Ascheim is leaving his post as the Associated Press’s Digital GM to join BBC Worldwide Americas to help the company chart its mobile strategy and develop unspecified new products. His title will be SVP, Digital Media, where he’ll manage the broadcaster’s American website and mobile systems. The AP has not named a replacement yet, a rep told paidContent.

Ascheim brings almost 20 years of media experience to BBCWW Americas. Before joining the AP a little over a year ago, he was Vice President Product Management at NYTimes.com (NYSE: NYT). Ascheim spent about five years at the New York Times. Early in his career, Ascheim worked at ABC (NYSE: DIS) News and FoxNews.com; in between, he spent some time in the startup world and was briefly CEO of a dating site called TheSquare.

In his new role, Ascheim will oversee the commercial growth of the North American edition of BBC.com which claims to have attracted over 38.7 million users in March 2011. He will report to Ann Sarnoff, COO BBC Worldwide Americas.
