Hi DJ,

I love your analogy of it being a symbiotic relationship. I think social media is a powerful tool in sharing information but it can also be very dangerous. What if the original "news" was incorrect. Our 6 degrees of separation would catch like wildfire but the credibility of these sites will be under attack. What do you think?

News organizations need to stop thinking in terms of silo's and start looking at the underlying cultural dynamics that are occurring here.

This entire ecosystem is actually ripe for innovation and there are so many opportunities that they could actually capitalize on if they put their focus into the right places.

I've worked for three major financial institutions in Canada and the US in the past 12 months that are being far more proactive, innovative and risk taking in a highly regulated environment than i see the globe and mail or CNN being. I find it strange particularly as the real time economy has been affecting Media in general for much longer.

Well put. There is a definite symbiotic relationship here. Without the MSM, Twitter wouldn't have much credible news to report. Yet, Twitter can be a great avenue for distributing the news. While I knew from the Twitter stream what the announcement last night likely was, I also appreciated the journalistic integrity of the MSM in confirming the news via multiple sources before reporting it. Professional journalism combined with social network distribution can be a powerful combination.
