Jeff,

Consumers found that it took a while for the CFLs to warm up to full brightness, that their equivalency ratings vs. incandescent bulbs were not as advertised, and that the light given off was not the same. Another drawback, the mercury in one bulb, for example, is enough to contaminate up to 6,000 gallons of water beyond safe drinking levels. Don't you think consumers deserve more repect?

Jeff, nice article. Rare earths Of the five trends, I’d put the rare earth materials one right at the top of those being driven by cold, hard economic realities. China dominates the supply of rare earth materials with around 95 percent of global production. There is a nice discussion of it by David Delesanta of Thermoenergy at Greentechmedia: http://www.greentechmedia.com/articles/read/guest-post-achieving-rare-earth-indepdence/
