thank you for reminding us of the obvious analogy of phone usage/no access to newspapers/no television, etc. the same common sense that motivated those "rules" should also apply here. it's amazing to me how many people will throw away their common sense and ethics in a heartbeat when faced with the prospect of being without their cell phones for a few minutes. we've grown so accustomed to shouting our opinions and every thought from the rooftops whenever we feel like it, that we've managed to convince ourselves that there are no limits - and then climb on our high horses to scream about the first amendment...anyway, speaking of climbing - time to get off my soapbox.

Great summary! I am afraid many people are still not understanding fully the potential harm social media can cause and not just in the justice system!

Wow, that is really interesting. I would think tweeting ANYTHING related to the trial while being on jury duty should be forbidden. You can't even talk to the juror next to you, how can you tweet about it?

Very interesting.

I guess I'm kind of surprised they still let them have their phones while they are in jury duty. They will probably ban them soon. Because I know if I was on jury duty I would probably be on my phone the whole time haha.

This is one of the best things I've read in recent weeks of freshly pressed. I'm considering sending the link to one of the judges here as I'm sure he would find it most interesting. Social media certainly has it's pros and cons, but I appreciate the way you've explained the aspects you have here. Gives me, and certainly others, something to think about. Thanks for posting. Meredith

So many topics for discussion here, and I think the conversation must begin in circles of authority. Answers and solutions are needed now.
While tweets from jurors is definitely idiocy, it also highlights a growing problem that social media is becoming reality for some people.
And yes, judges should be banned from using Facebook. How can they possibly argue objectivity if they are public friends with lawyers and even defendants?

Very interesting article. Using Facebook to help select jurors, define innocence or guilt---wow, now I'm really glad I haven't jumped on the FB wagon!
