Well first we should say that TBD was not a hyperlocal website. It's focus was on the entire DC region. I believe it was a great idea, just poorly executed.

Is Hyperlocal news doomed? Well yes if you only decide to report on Patch. The truth is - is that hyper-local has been successful around the country, no thanks to any corporate egos. Seattle has a few great ones and take a look at this blog in Concord, CA.

Another good piece. I just wrote up this issue as well, including a link to your 2/9 story. From what I've heard, it was more culture clash than strategic failure. Culture eats strategy for breakfast, as the saying goes.

If a link is cool, here it is: http://cparente.wordpress.com/2011/02/25/is-the-future-of-hyper-local-tbd/

Contrary to your headline and characterization (as well as Alan Mutter's), TBD was never a "hyper-local" site, and as such was not exactly comparable to Backfence or Patch. Although I admit "hyper-local" is a pretty subjective term, TBD was more or less a regional news site for a large metropolitan area, with an affiliated network of independent blogs. Backfence and Patch set up newsgathering operations in very small communities; TBD never did so, perferring to aim for a more generic approach (e.g., news, weather, entertainment, traffic, sports for an area with more than five million people). I won't comment on whether this is a good or bad approach, but "hyper local" it ain't.
