The UK radio industry’s Rajar group has released another set of stats it says shows growing consumption of its programming via online platforms.

Its research by Ipsos MORI polled only 1,091 respondents – but the findings are being extrapolated massively in to the millions

– 2.2 million people have downloaded a radio smartphone app (up from 1.4 million in June). Rajar says this was a quarter of smartphone owners who responded.

– But most mobile radio listening (53 percent) is done via FM antenna.

– Amongst app owners, nearly half use them at least once a week.

– 16.3 million people listen to radio on the internet.

– 12.7 million have used Listen Again.

– 8.1 million have downloaded a podcast.

– 2.6 million per week listen to personalised online radio.

Of course, the accuracy of this data depends on the method Ipsos MORI and Rajar use to extrapolate from its 1,091 survey respondents. This methodology isn’t disclosed in Rajar’s announcement.

Absolute Radio also issued its own stats…

– Mobile listening up 305 percent year on year (353,000 hours in November).

– Mobile listening is now four percent of the total (was 1 percent last year).

– Online live streamed hours up 40.2 percent year on year to 9.4 million hours in November.
