Couldn't agree more. That's why I canceled my print subscription after a year's trial, though I still follow the Sullivan and McArdle blogs online. What I look for in blog posts (quick updates, provocative ideas) is not what I look for in long print articles (depth, research, balance).

While the turnaround is impressive from a business standpoint I must say that it has come with a significant decline in editorial quality at The Atlantic. Most/all articles are now opinionated and it's impossible to get a relatively impartial view on a topic.

I recall distinctly the high quality of writing around 2001 and even remember noteworthy articles. But recently, I subscribed to the print version and unsubscribed within 4 mths after being disappointed with the tone, weak language and clear bias. I think the growth in opinioned blogging has often come at the expense of methodically researched articles and quality language. But quality is much harder to measure than cost... yay for the venture capital view.

That's a great point, Ishmael -- I have noticed the same thing about Salon and Greenwald, and there are other examples too. I think we are seeing that for some writers, their personal brand is arguably more important than that of the outlet that publishes them -- although that has been the case in newspapers and magazines for some time, even before the web came along.

It's interesting how important star bloggers can be to news sites. I didn't start reading Salon, for example, until I started reading Glenn Greenwald's blog regularly. Andrew Sullivan, too, seems to be a draw independent of the larger magazine, but to think that a quarter of the Atlantic's visitors come from him? That's shocking-- and terrifying too. What if your star blogger gets poached by another outlet?
