Cord cutting was one of the hottest topics at last week’s NewTeeVee Live conference. In fact, the term got mentioned so often that people started a drinking game, and The Hollywood Reporter even suggested that the conference was “the epicenter of cord cutting activism.”
For this week’s episode of Cord Cutters, we were tempted to reenact the drinking game — but we ended up discussing some of the most interesting takeaways of the conference instead:
One of the big subjects that we’ve been dealing with in previous episodes are the interfaces of new devices that aim to bring web video to the TV. The importance of getting simple things — like the remote control — right was at the center of a presentation given by Adaptive Path President Peter Merholz. His take on Sony’s (s SNE) Google TV remote control? YGTBFKM, which stands for “you got to be f***ing kidding me.”
Another subject we’ve had on the show before was Google TV’s stance towards cord cutting. My final verdict in a previous episode was that the Logitech (s LOGI) Revue Google TV set-top box doesn’t work well for cord cutters, and Google TV Product Lead Rishi Chandra confirmed on stage that the company isn’t targeting cord cutters, but people who want to enhance their cable TV experience.
Finally, we had a number of companies present that work on producing or distributing web-exclusive content, with the most popular one being YouTube. (s GOOG) The site’s users now upload 35 hours of video every minute, which can only mean one thing for cord cutters: There’s a ton of content out there, even if you don’t have cable.
