Hey Josh, great article! I am the co-founder of SPARQCode (www.sparqcode.com) and we have been in the QR Code space for over 3 years now. We have done extensive testing and some the other criteria that we look for in general is listed here.

Top 5 Attributes

1. Video Mode Scanning? This is important since the act of pushing a button can actually move the camera which could lead to image blur.
2. Are there any de-blur algorithms in the scanner? This is useful for phones that do not have a macro lens. Needed for any iPhone pre-3GS.
3. Does the scanner support designer qr codes such as the classic LV one from set (http://2d-code.co.uk/images/louis-vuitton-qr-code.jpg)? There are other factors too such as image skew, color contrasting, etc.
4. What encoding standards does the scanner support? Not all are the same e.g. many do not support MeCard for business contacts.
5. Does the scanner invoke the built in browser from the mobile OS or does it embed its own? We generally do not like scanners that have their own built-in browsers since many mobile sites are optimized for specific devices and many hacked implementations that have their own inferior browsers that can lead to a bad mobile experience (e.g. bad JS support etc.).

We don't make any scanning software so we can speak with complete transparency on this subject.

BeeTagg has also recently updated their app. It is the only app that can scan calendar QR codes, and it is fast as well.

You should have put a QR code with a link to the app in the app store next to each reviewed app :)
