i would like to say I recently purchased that galaxy tab, and I payed 600 plus tax and only an additional $8.oo for insurance(where as ipad insurance cost $100 more). With the 3 basic payments I made, I get access to internet as long as theres WiFi(which is usually everywhere accept the road). If you however can afford it and would liek to have WiFi AND 3G coverage so internet will work wherever you are, you can select a plan and pay anywhere from 20-80$ a month.

(( if you own a Mac, Android is not your friend as it doesn’t mount as a drive and there is no software to sync stuff with. ))

Duskrider, If I didn't know any better, given your incredibly consistent lack of knowledge about what you pontificate so authoritatively about, I would wonder if you were a paid astroturfer.

As JK says, mounting as a drive to a Mac? Sheesh? I was doing this a year ago with my HTC Hero (android) running a prehistoric version of the O.S. -- That's right, a USB cable right into my Mac -- mounted just any drive, full drag & drop file system. I now have an HTC Desire (froyo OS), and here I will admit that though it absolutely easily mounts in under 10 seconds as a drive to any and all of my Macs, it requires a widget-helper to speed up that process.

I think perhaps the multiple usage of the USB port for charging and data maybe required an extra step, but if you have ever even owned or touched an Android phone (I am betting money you never have -- and are merely going on heresay, so you can then use fragmentation and ecosystem below), then here's your simple clear as a bell solution: They have this thing called an app store: Gosh, about 7 or 8 months ago i entered the search term "Mount USB" and how odd that it returned a widget called "MountUSB Widget" by BK Mobility. I have it on my home screen, and tap it after i've plugged in my usb cable from phone to Mac -- it then switched functions from charging to USB, and tells you it's mounting. You might try it.

(( The fragmentation of Android ))

It's fun to use language that's been bandied about for a year. It doesn't add any new information or even provide any current validity, but it sure is fun! I want to try it:

fragmentation of Android.

Hey that feels good! I want to use that at Thanksgiving. I think it will impress people since talking about "The Social Network" will be so stale by then.

(( really about the ecosystem )) (( and Android simply isn’t there yet.))

Let's see, where have I heard that. Oh yeah, about a year ago. Hmm. God I guess Endora from Bewitched must've cast a spell or something, and in your world everthing just froze for you and Larry Tate, while the planet spun making your silly comment just garbage form gizmodo or tech crunch or engadget or BoyGeniusReport or god knows where, maybe even the tech section of People Magazine.

Endora, uncast that spell! Let him off the ceiling and let him fall flat on his face to the floor to wake up to this year.

I think that Android has to get it's act together before I'd be interested. The app store is a mess, with screen resolutions and such being an issue for a while yet.

I have the Archos 5 tablet and they had to put their own Appslib on it because the market doesn't support 5"+ screens. Frankly, it sucks. At this point, if you own a Mac, Android is not your friend as it doesn't mount as a drive and there is no software to sync stuff with.

The fragmentation of Android causes me great concern already. Now you add in 7-10" tablets to the mix and I get even more worried. Worried enough not to drop my money on it. These devices are really about the ecosystem wrapped around them and Android simply isn't there yet.

James - that siren song you are hearing is for the HP Slate, not the Galaxy. Seriously, I've already put one on order, depsite it being heavier, larger, and probably shorter battery life than the Galaxy. I guess some of us are just too old school and expect to get real work done on our gadgets.
