Saul Griffith, inventor, multiple entrepreneur and MacArthur fellow, is knee-deep in a new electric bicycle project: Onya Cycles! Griffith and his team, through their incubator Other Lab, have built a series of innovative, and heavy-lifting, electric bikes that are meant to replace local car trips to the store, including the tilting electric tricycle called the Front-End Loader, the Mule cargo bike, and the super-cute ET. For this week’s episode of GigaOM TV’s Green Overdrive video show we hung out with Griffith and took the Front-End Loader for a ride. Who needs a car when you can turn to pedals and batteries.

    The electrified bike trend is appalling, in Copenhagen where I live, 37% of the inhabitants use a bike for commuting every day, more and more use a cargo/tri-bike in stead of a car, actually 25% of all families with 2+ children own a tri-bike -all without any kind of motor, and it works fine for us, with a full load of groceries or children.

    Why should we need electricity and polluting electric engine production, to be green, use your legs and you will live longer in a greener world ;-)

  7. The trend of electrified bikes is really sick, any healthy teen/adult does not need an engine to help pedaling, not even for cargo/tri-bikes, unless you live in a city with extremely steep hills.
    almost 40% of the inhabitans of Copenhagen use a bike daily for commuting, 25% of 2+ children families own a tri-bike for doing groceries, driving the youngsters etc. all without an engine other than those trimmed thighs ;-)

    Forget the engine and you will live longer in a more pleasant world.

    I think the Nihola handles better than most tri-bikes, as the front wheels turns, whereas most depend on the entire front box turning, which demands that the bike tilts somewhat, and you need to let go of a strong grip.

    I can see how living in a pancake-flat country for too long has actually made you think that the earth is flat. Welcome to my homeland Norway, just a short hop away on the ferry, and you will see awesome hills and mountains. If you are even going to contemplate using a cargo bike in our country you certainly need an electric motor. So save the “appalling” and the strange “polluting electric motors” argument for a real reason like your coal fired power plants which still power the majority of your country and enjoy 100% hydro electric transportation in the land of “mountain monkeys”, as you are fond to call us.
