Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) said today it filed a lawsuit against Motorola (NYSE: MOT), alleging that the handset maker is infringing on nine Microsoft patents in its production of Google’s Android-based smartphones. The lawsuit clearly demonstrates how competitive the smartphone market has gotten, as this is only the latest in a flurry of lawsuits between the major handset manufacturers, including Nokia (NYSE: NOK), Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) and HTC.

The company issued a statement from Horacio Gutierrez, Microsoft’s corporate VP and deputy general counsel of Intellectual Property and Licensing:
