Free, open-source software (FOSS) is finally a trusted solution in the enterprise, but primarily only in infrastructure layers. The promise of a completely open-source enterprise is nigh, but the nagging question remains: Will it work as a business for the technology industry? New business models are appearing that bridge the old world of enterprise software with the promise and customizations of open source.
This morning, the GigaOM team is welcoming a small group of entrepreneurs, executives and investors to our San Francisco offices to engage in a town hall-style forum to consider the following question: When will IT applications and infrastructure based on open source realistically form the complete IT delivery chain? We’ll be live streaming the discussion to subscribers at GigaOM Pro beginning at 9:30 a.m.
At this event, the latest GigaOM Pro Bunker Session, we bring together elements of the ecosystem — vendors, buyers, investors and project leaders — to discuss what the next opportunities could be, and what still needs to be done. If you’re not already a GigaOM Pro subscriber, sign up today. We’re offering a special 25-percent discount on a one-year subscription to make sure everyone who wants to attend gets a chance. I am a bootstrapper thinking about Open Source ERP….
I tried to get a 7 day free GigaOmPro to attend this…but you are requesting credit card info for a free subscription. Why?
One of the main missing links in my opinion is the lack of a good alternative to Active Directory especially when it comes to desktop management, user management, group policies, software updates, SSO, etc.
The second major problem is drivers. Try finding a driver for that Canon Imageclass copier/printer in the pantry. You’ll probably end up using some generic PCL driver.
Until these 2 problems are resolved OSS is gonna be stuck powering database servers, appliances, app servers, etc in the data center.
