However it does make me wonder why they added the grid if it was to be 100% solar powered…

In India i know of a few mobile towers which are completely remote & are powered by solar energy.

These do send the excessive power to the grid, but mostly after they have enough power for their own needs, if they are short of power they wont sell it to the utility company

I had to get a site online in an area without access to the grid at all. Solar panels (forget how many now) with a propane generator as backup. Oh, this was for US Cellular.
