I agree. If they make their games like quakelive.com or host them on OnLive or other services like that, they wouldn't have a piracy problem.

However, I also think piracy on the web happens because it's a natural aspect of the web. Things get copied over the web. It's how the Internet works. So why fight it? Embrace it. Just like the music studios have eventually embraced Youtube, and figured out how to make money from it even as people kept uploading their music videos.

I have a small indie label and one of the drummers [a drummer!] put it best when I was telling them I intended on making all releases freely available:

buying an album as a way of checking out a [new to you] band is sketchy

Folks do not have to gamble on digital purchases anymore. Instead of buying something they may like, they can now focus on supporting the game developers/musicians/whoever they want to. Nothing wrong with that in my eyes.

I hate hearing about downloads as potential lost sales. As this article suggests, every download is a future potential sale.

I wonder if this will end up driving a greater number of game developers to move their content to online, hosted experiences, instead of downloadable apps. If technologies like WebGL and HTML5 offline storage can be made to run fast enough in browsers, game developers might be able to write games that run most of their logic locally on a user's computer, but still require lots of frequent phoning-home to the game developer's server.

It'd make "try-before-you-buy" a lot easier, and massively curb (or end) piracy as well.
