Josey you have a good point. I personally may not want to read the exact same newspaper on my iPad as in print. But to have something specifically built for tablets and iPads may serve the audience in a better way. It may not be so much as trying to rescue the newspaper companies from going under as keeping the public informed. The main idea is not newspapers but the delivery of news material to the public. If that remains the focus of companies like the NY Times then who cares if no one buys paper at the stand as long as they are getting their news another way be it through the iPad or Kindle.

Say what you must, 70 percent of a hell of a lot is better than 100 percent of nothing, It worked for the Music industry, It worked for the TV industry, hell it even invented (or fostered) the online app industry. If Newspaper moguls can't see that apple is right on this one, they deserve going bankrupt un less than 5 years. the paper who does this first will have A LOT to earn vs what it's already losing. plain math 3 billion idevices at 70 cents per edition (if it were 1 dollar) you do the math, you thing the NYtimes is earning more than that right now? just from the sales not mentioning the adds.

"Better yet, start from scratch and build something from the ground up aimed specifically at tablet computers. It’s a risk, but is it any more of one than continuing to watch readership numbers fall?"

- I think USA Today has already hinted that is precisely what they aim to do
