Today, I have the unfortunate task of relaying some sad news — Rich Buchanan, former chief marketing officer at Ooma, and former VP of marketing at Sling Media, passed away this morning due to health complications. He recently had a four-hour long open heart surgery and returned home earlier this month. As recently as Aug. 8, he was tweeting about a car drive on Twitter.

Rich left Ooma, a VoIP company, earlier this year, after helping it build traction in the retail channels. He was widely regarded in the consumer electronics business. He was a fixture at many of our events, and over the years he’d become a dear friend to me and our company. His sense of humor and ability to stay calm in even hairiest of situations is what I loved about him. I am going to miss him. Goodbye Rich!

  1. This is indeed very very sad news. Rich was my boss for just a bit over a year back at Sling, and I someone I learned a tremendous amount from, and had tremendous respect for. He was never a “front and center” of the news kind of guy, and flew under the radar a lot, but trust me that the high tech industry has lost a valuable member, and many of us have lost a wonderful friend.

  3. I’m still in shock: Rich was the definition of indestructible, beating the odds his whole life. And I agree: what a big loss to the tech community. It’s hard to find individuals as deeply versed across the spectrum of technology & business and with the charismatic oomph to propel ideas & people forward. He was generous, opinionated, and above all fearless. @Rich: We miss you already!

One thing is for sure though – your spirit will live on!

  7. Wow, this is a very sad news. Rich was the consummate professional, worked amazingly hard and had the highest of integrity. There were few people in the Valley who really knew the consumer electronics market as well as Rich and I’m blessed to have had the time I spent with him. This is a big loss for the industry and for me personally. Rest well old buddy.
