That was a smart move by Netflix, taking the leader role in a category where content is flying freely and available virtually everywhere is priceless. This was not an investment based on traditional distribution business models, this was an investment in posturing and dominating a very crowded space. I'm sure their intent was to raise the bar and make it more difficult for competitors to compete while their cost-per-leads go down and conversion rates go up. Congratulations to Epix HD and Netflix - both winners!

Without looking at the financials and the agreement struck with Epix in detail it is difficult to make a fair assessment of whether Epix overpaid. There may have been a premium paid on the content, however, the deal provides Netflix with a deep library of content for online streaming which will support growth in subscriber adoption and may even reduce churn. Furthermore, this is a critical juncture for the transition from DVD to streaming, and Netflix is making a very intelligent and calculated bet that it needs to secure as much content now to support acquiring a dominant lead in the online movie streaming space. In my opinion, the strategic value of the deal far exceeds the premium that may have been paid. Smart move.

You have to factor in the degree of corruption in the Wall Street analyst business. They are in the business of producing reports that allow their brokers to recommend buy/sell actions.

This seems like a good move by Netflix. They need to move fast to consolidate their market position.
