After 12 years as Viacom’s chief information officer, Joe Simon is heading to Condé Nast for a similar role. The hire comes two weeks after Robert Sauerberg was promoted to president of Condé Nast from group president, consumer marketing in the wake of David Carey’s defection to Hearst Magazines. As chief technology officer, Simon will report to Sauerberg.

At Viacom (NYSE: VIA), Simon oversaw the information technology systems for 58 networks in the U.S. and 106 networks globally, as well as managing internet and mobile app development for 418 websites.

Condé Nast has been ramping up its digital offerings at an accelerated pace lately. This past week, the publisher began selling downloads of its Glamour mag app for the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch at $3.99 in the iTunes App Store. The app, which was created in-house by Condé Nast Digital, the umbrella unit for all the publisher’s online properties. Currently, Adobe (NSDQ: ADBE), which has produced the app version of Wired, is now working on a similar version for The New Yorker.
