As a huge Mac fan, I anxiously awaited the 3G because I already had my iPhone, iPods, Mac desktop and apple tv. I bought the iPad primarily to use in my yard, otherwise,I would just use the Mac desktop inside the house.

After only three days of use, I am so majorly disappointed in my ability to use the iPad outdoors. It shuts down outdoors after 15-30 minutes of use with a Temperature shut off screen. I was using it in the shade, so I could see the screen and to keep it out of the direct sun. It was in the mid 70's outdoors with a breeze each time it shut down. It is a fabulous device that I want to use outdoors, but can't, so what is the point? Please, please, please will the powers that be at Apple address this! Also, not only does it shut down, but it does so without warning and doesn't save any of your work.

PS.....where is the clock? I really miss it.

still don't see why you can't use one of your EXISTING computers to write on, during the train ride. You are creating this need, not your work. Why you can't pop open a laptop that you already have next to you and write on that, is beyond me. No, better go spend another $1000 bucks on another device. It's OK to go buy things you want, but to justify it like you have; SAD dude, sad.

"I did have an iPad-sized hole in my life. For me, a MacBook is weighty overkill. I have two jobs: the corporate-level one that pays the bills and my writing gig where I blog, freelance, and work on personal projects. The day job comes with its own Windows laptop that I lug around. I try to maintain a separation between the corporate job and personal work, so there’s very little in the way of personal data on the work machine. My commute is almost four hours round-trip. Most of it’s on a train, but if I wanted to write, I’d need the MacBook with me."

OMG it sucks to be you. 4 hours commuting, 2 jobs, and yet your concern is buying more unnecessary gadgets. Funny now people get so caught up in their lives they don't see the big picture. Almost 30 hours a week sitting on a train? Sounds like a fine slice of hell. Oh well, join the herd.

I still compare the iPad with my Newton MessagePad 2100... So far, the iPad doesn't do the one thing that I love the most about my Newton - handwriting recognition! Apple has shelved this amazing technology which they had a decade lead on all other players, and now my Nokia phone does it, but not the iPad... What is up with that?! Also, of all the things I see myself really enjoying with the iPad, iChat AV is probably top of the list. Lastly, the "iTunes" paradigm for data-transfer to- and from- the device has got to end. iTunes has become a giant hack because Apple has dumped everything from contact sync to Movie rental into it. C'Mon Apple!! This is NOT the way Human Interface used to be done in Cupertino.. In fact, it's starting to look an aweful lot like Redmond around there...
My $.02

Pages is far from useless. I like it a lot. (Being a journalist, that ought to count for something.) But I have found Numbers to be the most useful of the three, and I'm pretty much spreadsheet illiterate.

The ipad has essentially replaced my laptop. The major app left on the laptop is Quicken. I have the 3G model, and as of this writing haven't had a need to invoke it, including a cross country plane trip ( during which I watched two movies on it).

Found Simple Note to be a great app for me. It synchronizes my iphone, ipad and imac almost instantly via the cloud. This type of synch should be a mandatory app spec.

Read the news every morning with coffee. Sad to say the Safari page of news like the New York Times and USA Today is far better than the app and you can load an icon for the web version via bookmarks. I have a subscription to the WSJ on my iphone, but dropped reading it do to its insane pricing policy for the ipad.

Read ebooks using ibook and the kindle apps. Like Kindle/Amazon selection & pricing but the killer feature for me is the imbedded dictionary on the ibook. Also nice is the ease of adjusting the illumination, especially in bed when the lights go down.

There are a couple of drawbacks:

Security -- A 4 digit passcode is weak. I hope I don't lose this. There are a lot of pw's imbedded in the apps, eg email.
Remote printing--nuff said

Could go on and on about the positive features and experience.
( Did I mention battery life, weight, no heat, GPS etc)

The world is beginning to understand this revolutionary and exciting device. Other companies are about as far behind as they were at iphone announcement time. They don't quite get it.

Now if they would just write this app for the ipad.....

I love the iPad, at work I use a laptop and even that I bring my iPad to meetings giving the laptop a Desktop only use...

The whole iWork suite is amazing, but Apple has to learn more about using the Cloud even a MobileMe connection would be great on them.

GoodReader and Sketchbook are to great apps also.

And If you are an student you definitively had to check Quick Graphs, that 2d and 3d graphic calculator is very usable and its a great tool.
