well my thoughts are that there are tools who support old school collaboration methods ... like meetings. Perhaps www.agreedo.com would be worth a mention although the tool itself is not old school but it speeds up old school meetings ... :-)

Its unfortunate how no one has decided to innovate on Mailing Lists and Discussion Forums. They're incredible tools for helping people communicate (at their individual pace), but aren't the most user friendly.

This is why I created Braintrust (http://BraintrustHQ.com), a social collaboration tool for groups and teams, that combines timeless essentials of mailing lists and discussion boards with the innovative features of social networks.

Check it out and see how Braintrust (http://BraintrusthHQ.com) can help organize and streamline your team's conversations.

You're very right about group chat being incredibly helpful, but IRC has a number of downsides:
- It's complicated to set up your own server
- Non-techies aren't really comfortable with commands like "/join #meeting"
- You have to set up a custom logging bot like MeetBot to record your conversations (and they're not even searchable once recorded)
- You can't share files/images (let alone get previews of them)

These are a few of the issues that drove us to create HipChat (http://www.hipchat.com). Check it out if you'd like to see how awesome company chat can be.
