I've been seeing articles pop up on the more technical-minded sites about how "opt-in" or "opt-out" might not be such a key feature in preventing the erosion of your privacy. They point out that any sort of recommendation engine is inherently a security flaw; programs can violate privacy by puzzling out the data points the site records for use as recommendations and assemble a profile of you whether you "allow" it or not.

@gbp, exactly right. Problems like Facebook have and will continue to come up frequently until and unless effective action is taken against the root cause: ignorance.

It's not too hard to make the case that the US K-12 and public tertiary education systems have been systematically laid waste since the mid-1970s. Three and a half decades of at-best neglect is going to take a lot of time, effort and resources to overcome. I'm increasingly convinced of three things: 1) it is an absolute necessity if we're to reverse the fragmentation and divide-and-rule mentality in society/politics/culture today; 2) it's going to take three hells of a lot more resources than if we'd just evolved the then-existing system; and especially 3) those of us who care to participate in – or even be aware of – discussions like this on the Web are a minuscule drop in the stormy ocean. Granted, every revolution started with a small group of committed individuals — but those small groups were ORGANIZED.
