Finally, someone on the internet with a shread of sense!!! Google has a lot of other high profile products such as Android, Youtube, Maps etc., but how many of them are revenue generating or profitable. They are seriously vulnerable.

Yahoo on the other hand, has a bunch of popular properties on the web. They are making meaningful moves on the mobile end with partnerships with Samsung, plus ipad app. They are in good graces with Apple (who is not threatened by them). They have a share in Alibaba and Maktoob. They are about to launch Yahoo Middle East. Yahoo Answers is the search engine for every other language in the world.

Carol Bartz is an excellent leader! Yahoo has it made.

Yes, Google relies a lot on ads, but what’s the problem with that?

The problem happens when the ad revenue drops. Google relies ENTIRELY on ads. If they lose a portion of that, it'll be catastrophic. They'll have to shut down all those free tools.

The Google ad delivery method was great five years ago. But it hasn't improved. Facebook has a better tool.

Google had the advantage of a good customer relation...

You obviously don't work with Google. Agencies, partners, and other companies in contact with Google know what it's like to deal with Google.

Their revenues have been on a decline when you do a 5 year comarision. They have been slow off the gates on the mobile and internet convergence and that is where the growth is. Goolge has not been leading on that front but followign behind the likes of Apple. I read on analyst [can't remember where] report last week which projected their stock price to around $60 form the $500 mark it is today. If that happens then the decline will be real.

yes, google relies a lot on ads, but what's the problem with that? Ads are the reason why google can give us all of these products for free. I doubt that the ads market is going to change. More and more people are spending a lot of time online, so if google keeps a strong and evolving ads system (which is what it is doing) then I see no problem for them.

Also, google had the advantage of a good customer relation and good pr, that makes people less likely to leave google if a better service comes up (at least for some time but that give google time to catch up).

The quality of Bing and Yahoo is irrelevant, just as the quality of Google's search is irrelevant. Bing doesn't have to be better than Google: Bing only has to kill Google.

Bing's strategy: focus on the searches for air travel, finance, hotels, etc. These are high-value searches where advertisers will pay high clicks and people will click on ads. By capturing that market, Bing gets the revenues. Google is left with low-value or no-value informational and navigational searches.

The same has happened with supermarkets. Whole Foods has 1% market share, but it sells the high-value products to the high-value shoppers, which account for the bulk of supermarket profits. The other supermarkets are left with commodity products and coupon-clippers.

Well said Mathew.

If the dominant web revenue model continues to be advertising then Google (the company) will do ok. But there's a lot of growth in share price, so it's not clear the same will apply to the stock.

But they're badly positioned if consumer payment models start gaining ground. Google Marketplaces is very SME focused.

I'm reminded of the UK TV companies who got caught with the trousers very much down when subscriptions took off overnight.
