Great article, with great links. I'm definitely interested in seeing whether the long term rural broadband solution is wireless or wired. I just can't imagine it being a wired solution.

What is the FCC going to do to spur competition in the wired networking world? Apparently nothing. We will still have a duopoly - and without competitive pressures, they will be slow to upgrade, prices will remain high, and customer service will continue to suck.

Wireless is no competition - some 95% of Americans get their home broadband from DSL, cable, or fiber network. Wireless is slow and less reliable - great for mobility but no way will it replace my cable connection at home. Any benefits to broadband in the US following what this plan appears to be will be entirely on the margins. What a disappointment. The FCC and Obama Administration will talk tough but reinforce the power of incumbent providers.

Ain't no competition on the way, hope you like your current provider.

Unlicensed spectrum is a nightmare. You are pleasantly web surfing (or whatever) and your neighbor turns on his unlicensed device and you are disconnected and you have no idea why. Sounds like an accident waiting to happen. We need to license RF devices and POLICE USAGE or all of that spectrum is fair to all and no fair to anyone!

So what is the FCC doing to get out of the way? Many of the hindrances to broadband deployments at higher speeds are political and regulatory. Wireless is the way to go, and the government is still sitting on much of the good spectrum, and the spectrum auctions that we do have are highly flawed, and tilted to special interests.
