I run Sophos Free Anti-Virus for Mac.

I think its pretty unlikely that my Mac will get infected (I’m a pretty savvy computer user and doubt I’d get duped by social engineering). But for zero $ cost and zero performance cost, why not?

I’d rather have anti-virus and not need it, than need it and not have it.

Hey Carlos, I think you are drifting from the point. Many fan boys are pointing out how “safe” macs are. Krash is pointing out facts that macs, surprisingly to you, are not bulletproof. It’s good for someone like Charlie to come along and do this. I hope more and more hackers join in and start hacking macs. I hope to see a rise in mac viruses. It would be nice, yet seemingly impossible, to quiet the fanboys for at least a minute.

If you go for the shady, pirating things on Mac, then yes, I think that person should get a quality Mac security suite. There aren’t many effective Malware for the Mac out there, but they exist. You never know.

But, if you’re cautious with downloading things on an Apple computer in the first place, then it’s probably not necessary.

And this is about more than just Macs, it’s about being a good internet samaritan. Plenty of scanners for Mac also detect Windows based Malware, and I think it’s good courtesy to help prevent the spread of Malware in general.

I envy Linux users.

All online banking systems advise their customers to use computers that have up-to-date antivirus/malware protection. I would assume that if you lost any financial assets in your accounts due to fraudulent internet attacks on your account, the bank would be less likely to replace your assets if your computer was not protected. I would appreciate any comments about this concern.

I’ve had my iMac for 5 years. I’ve been on a LOT of dodgy websites with the carefree and reckless abandon of a 3 year old. Never had one problem. Anti-virus for mac is more than useless.

Ok, so I’m breathing life into a 8-month dead troll, but somebody might stumble across this like I did and read your nonsense. “Macs don’t even need their software firewall on”?? Say WHAT? You do realize there is a big freaking difference between malware resiliency (real or imagined) and network security, right? Forget virus writing. You go ahead and turn off your firewall and invite some plain old fashioned port scanning and poking for fun (and oh yea, PROFIT). I don’t care if you’re running Windows, MacOS, Linux, UNIX, or freaking IBM Z/OS on the mainframe in your momma’s basement. You don’t stick your wire in the Internet hole without wearing a condom. Don’t need a firewall on a Mac?? Jeez, and I thought I was a fanboy…

Here’s what’s funny to me… and so annoying about some MAC users, (and YES, I am one too). It takes no effort to install/download or use an antivirus, spyware, malware (etc) program and yet some of you, with your elitist mentalities, turn your head up at them like your MAC is too good for them. Then come on here telling us “down to earth” MAC users not to sweat it… be freeeee! OM to the mother-effin’ G, get over yourselves people! It’s up to each individual… if ya want one, use one, if not, then so be it, but don’t make fun of each other’s choices.

Sorry, but as I read these comments, I was just annoyed at how some of you came across. Have a MACnificent day!
