Although sometimes the control goes a little too far- for example Steve Job’s patent application for advertising content which looks up your iWhatever until you respond to it- interfering with your music, movie or game. Now I think the idea of that is barbaric. Hopefully, Apple just registered that so no-one else can use it, and they’ll just sit on it. If not, well. I won’t be buying Apple products anytime after that.

It’s convenient and done in micro payments… what’s 99 cents these days when a coffee is 5 dollars? So it’s a publishing play not really a device. Sure it’s closed. That’s the whole idea. When the Ipod came out there were better mp3 (and much cheaper) players and bigger stores to get digital music than Ipod. By keeping everything proprietary they killed off competition. Go find a boom box that has a recharge, link, slot for anything but an Ipod. This is good?

When the Iphone came out again there were already touch phones available that could have apps placed on them. Some companies are fighting back as Apple again tries to kill competition with proprietary actions and full control of what apps can be distributed.

IPad.. another marketing ploy to try to capture the low cost netbook market (which is quite sizable) Apple has never made serious inroads in the business computer realm so it seems this is a fresh start at attacking the fringes. Getting hype over a lame product, relying on installed base to talk it up and help root in the proprietary aspect of the device. Again there are better and cheaper solutions to this oversize iphone wanna be that doesn’t have an inherent universal port… but people like to be led like sheep… stay with the flock.

Apple has been the league leader in offense for many years now. However, their failure to play good defense let other teams like Microsoft copy many of their good designs and capitalize on them. This has happened repeatedly with both software (example: Windows) and hardware (examples: iMac, Zune, Droid, Nexus One, Storm, Palm Pre, etc.).

I think that’s why they are now focusing on both offense and defense. Defense takes the form of secrecy regarding new products, numerous patent applications, and software distribution via iTunes. All of these moves make it harder for the copy-cats do create knock-offs.

Former fanboys, like Aaron Swartz (and others), are not paranoid. They just know what the original values of Apple were, and how they are quickly deviating. Whether or not the ‘SupersizeME iPhone’ makes it or not is not the point. The real point is that so-called “journalists” continue to be willfully blind. The power behind decisions which push every aspect of society into a hyper-controlled corner, including the OS of computers, is strangely and precisely what you deny.
