No, the iPhone 3g and the original Iphone have the same exact spec horsepower wise. The only reason apple would limit the first gen is because they want you to upgrade.

Iphone 3G: 412 cpu 128mb of ram
Iphone 3GS: 600 cpu 256mb of ram
