Google’s threat to exit China in response to internet attacks originating from that country is drawing attention to the rocky relationship between Yahoo (NSDQ: YHOO) and Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba Group, which it owns a 44 percent stake in. Last week, Yahoo said:

  1. Joe,

It’s great for you to start covering the real story regarding internet attacks and intellectual property instead of the “censorship” angle. Google and Yahoo has both cooperated in getting people in China prosecuted over postings on their web properties in the past and there was a Congressional hearing on this, they are not innocent free-speech patriots.

The real story is bigger than what most people want to admit, including the content industry – if China can make a Gucci purse look real and able to sell them worldwide, what makes any of us think “content” is immune once it becomes a paid model?
