Chess community Chess.com has bought some assets of rival Chesspark, which had been on the brink of shutting down. Chess.com says it has picked up the Chesspark domain; Chesspark accounts have also been transferred over to Chess.com. No financial details were released although Chess.com notes that it did not buy the technology, servers or team behind Chesspark.

Chesspark raised $1 million in an angel round in June 2007. But in a release Chess.com says that Chesspark had run out of funds and faced a possible shutdown. It also notes that Chesspark’s founders had moved on to start real-time search startup Collecta, which we profiled in June.

The online chess market is crowded. Other sites that let visitors play chess online include ChessBase, Internet Chess Club, PlayChess and the recently venture capital funded ChessCube. Chess.com says “isn’t easy for any of us in chess” and it is expecting more consolidation. More in the release.
