Ha, Cisco said "alleged"! Maybe "unreleased" or "unannounced" would have been a better choice given the FCC sourcing, which I tend to believe. :)

Yeah, Roku's an impulse buy for many at a mere $100 and is dead simple to use, as Chris says. I bought the original the day it went on sale. Haven't regretted it. And I'm looking forward to the Mediafly video podcast integration which good. (Flickr on my TV doesn't interest me much, but Pandora might.)

Someone's gonna get nothing but apples and pennies in their trick or treat back for being so sarcastic.

1.) True story: when I was growing up we had a video disc player. My father is many things, great purchaser of consumer technology not among them. No -- I got rid of my DVD player (there's one in the Xbox if I really need it), and am off discs.

2.) You've never met my wife, who loathes cables.

3.) Roku is awesome because it's dead simple, it offers me older titles (Mystery Science Theater!) on Netflix, and newer releases on Amazon VOD. Plus, it's going to get a whole lot more soon.

1) What did you ditch? Your old betamax, Video Disk player and Sega Genesis or was it something newer that is being replaced by some other technology?

2) Cable management is an issue but not the reason to say NO to another STB just a reason to buy some cable managment hardware (Wraps, ties, clips) and get organized.

3) Why do you think Roku is so awesome?

I don't think it's a strawman. I've actively pruned the number of boxes under my TV (and the accompanying thicket of cords). If Roku wasn't so awesome, I'd probably just use my Xbox.

Argh! Why is this straw man always put up? YES - people do want another box under, beside, on top and remote to their TV. If it provides utility, even marginally, they want it. Roku is a perfect example. 1000's of the best titles from days of yore but they manage to sell hundreds of thousands of boxes.

The Box is the best way to go until a successful business model is developed.
