The big news is the Verizon Droid by Motorola that was officially launched today, but a second phone in the Droid line for Big Red has surfaced. The HTC Droid Eris looks to be similar to the HTC Hero on Sprint. Some observant folks noticed this online in a Verizon training spot to bring employees up to speed on the new Eris. The rumors have the Eris as a more budget-friendly member of the new Droid line, starting at $99. This is much cheaper than the Hero on Sprint. We’ll have to wait for official word from Verizon to find out what the deal is with the Droid Eris. I see consumer confusion with the Droid and the Droid Eris in stores.

  1. Have to totally appreciate Verizon for their product naming. Bet they have some ‘really’ smart & high paid people deciding this stuff.

  2. Eris is the Greek goddess of strife, known in Roman mythology as Discordia. See also Discordianism.

I found this page by googling “droid eris discordia.” Now that we’ve found out that the new Google phone, Nexus One, is a likely nod to Philip K Dick, it occurred to me that the Eris is a probably a nod to the Principia Discordia. Both works are popular in the same subculture. Haven’t been able to find much info on it yet.
