The only other network in the US Apple to sell to is T-Mobile and they are not clamoring to bring it to their network.

Apple's not going to go backward to CDMA, so it might only be on Verizon in 2011 or whenever LTE is deployed.

But Verizon has a history of restricting device manufacturers from offering solutions. The only one I can think of with Apple has been the bluetooth issue of updating contacts and files. Apple is unlikely to be on Verizon, unless Verizon accepts giving Apple a lot of freedom, not just in the technology offered but also in marketing the product.

I’m a developer, and I still use the iPhone 2G that I bought on day one. I should upgrade, but it works fine. I am noticing a touch of slowness, particularly with the 200meg app we designed for a label. That is pushing it!

Everything works…

Because Apple has not interest in low end laptops or computers, they leave that market to Windows manufacturers. When you buy a Mac, you are not only paying for a premium OS that comes pre-loaded with software, you are buying hardware quality and a laptop/computer that seamlessly works and allows you to be productive from the time you press the power button. Your friends are not looking to pay for quality or ease of use, they are looking for something that is good enough. You get what you pay for and in the case of your friends, I'm sure they did. Apple is not going to cater to them, unfair as it may seem, they need to go find a cheap PC somewhere at Best Buy. Nothing to see here folks, move along, move along.

now why can they not get this same price mentality in play with the MacBook. they would take a massive market share away from windows if they sold last years basic MacBook for say $549.00

Did you understand what I wrote?

I have no clue what point you're trying to make. Based on their last quarterly report, Palm is getting squeezed. The falling off in Pre sales will not get Palm better deals with subsequent carriers.

Android and its SDK might be free to the other mfrs, but they're still developing software to differentiate their handset, as well as spending time integrating Android onto phones with different form factors, and features (i.e., keyboard) iPhone OS costs are partially shared with Apple's Mac OS.

iPhone is a phenomenon; not only just a handset that most of us have our eyes on. I have been a Blackberry user for a long time now (blame it on my employer!), but I secretly (and not so secretly at times) pine for an iPhone. It's seductive, and it's coolness gizmofied.
I think making the older model available at $99 is the best possible move that AAPL could make. It's great that this move will force all the vendors to rethink their pricing.
I am not particularly enamored with Microsoft; but then again I can't eliminate it from my life. Similarly, I believe iPhone will be as ubiquitous as Windows. There will possibly be superior products, but iPhone will beat them all (unless it's already done).
And yes, I do hope AppStore becomes a huge success. There's no reason why it should not be. It's got the right ingredients for success - a robust platform, a bunch of dedicated followers, and the coolness that attracts the best minds to develop apps on that platform.

It might not be a good idea, but most people have been doing this for ages. No. 1 example was Microsoft Office, until an industry sprung up to get that data free. Even now, people still buy Office because they don't want to risk being incompatible.

As for Apple today, I'm not sure what you're talking about. Music, video, photos: all use open standard formats. Apps are always tied to a platform. So if you're still making this argument, you must be stuck in the 1990s.
