My wife and I decided to stop driving in 2003, and after a couple of years we sold our automobile to get it out of the way. We have a large sturdy wagon to haul our groceries, and do most of our non-grocery shopping online. The usual carriers (UPS, FedEx, DHL, et al.) can bring things to our door much more economically (in environmental terms) than we ever could with a car. We rarely use public transportation, relying upon shoe leather instead, but on those very infrequent occasions when we need to travel to some far away place we rent an economy car.

Once you become accustomed to it, it's a very nice lifestyle. We are more relaxed, our health and fitness have improved, and our expenses have decreased. We'll probably end up buying a car next year because our circumstances are about to change, but we're not looking forward to the hassles of car ownership at all.
