Not sure exactly how apps that impact the network and consumer experience are good for innovation. If an operator consciously made the same choices on how their preloaded apps behaved, they would get creamed by the press and consumers. When a company is designing a product, they have contraints in terms of time, money, resources, etc, but there are decisions that are made in the product development process that have real impacts. Waze is not even a particularly egregious example...there have been several comapnies I've talked to over the years whose early version imacted the ability of the handset to make voice calls...ooops! Waze is to be commended for innovation, and for trying to drive competition, but there are other considerations, as I think I've pointed out.

Articles like this really miss the point. New applications that push the limits of battery life and bandwidth consumption are *good* for innovation. Pushing these limits pushes the demand for these things, which incites innovations in providing better coverage and battery life. In the short term it is interesting to work around these current limitations, but if we never had any applications that needed ubiquitous broadband coverage and constant location awareness, we would never get the infrastructure to support the next generation of connected living applications. I started to say that Waze is ahead of it's time, but I don't think it is. I think it is helping to create it's time. As have every great technology innovators.

Nice headline, meant to draw clicks!

The headline had very little to do with the actual article.

How about using journalism ethics once in a while? Use a headline like:

"Waze crowdsources maps for mobiles, causes network congestion"

Waze is an interesting application that shows the potential of a crowd-sourced mobile application. Leaving the battery and bandwidth issue aside, the "base map" and data that Waze uses resides in a silo - only for use by the Waze application.

OpenStreetMap (www.openstreetmap.org) is a broader crowd-source effort, with over 170K contributors around the world. OSM is the "Wikipedia" of maps, providing a rich set of base maps available world wide to application developers across web and mobile. The OSM map database is growing at an exponential rate and is already provides more richness than traditional map providers like Navteq and Teleatlas in major cities and certain European countries like Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
