Nice article. Is is not a concept I have been open to before, but the trends you mention suggest otherwise. Somehow the idea of manipulating an avtaar through a keyboard has not felt engaging enough. Doing it through a Goggle Box or something might be different though.

I recently did a video about virtual teams working in a 2-D environment that you may want to see - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=na3Tao39sjg

All of what you say is very true, however, the true value of virtual worlds over 2D (web conferencing, for ex) experiences is not just in the ability to sit next to each other in world and talk or show presentations, but to concurrently create and manipulate content- which is a much more challenging to develop. As part of a research project looking at ways of extending the notion of collaboration into a 3D environment(now available to clients), we looked at highly collaborative activities that are done by small teams - usually when they are physically together in one location - which could not be easily accomplished with existing 2D (or 3D for that matter) tools. Brainstorming (using 'sticky notes') is a good example of such an activity. Easy to do with a physically co-located team, hard with a virtual team! Check out our video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qJJWx552lFE

Great Article and appreciate fully what you are saying.
The opportunities for original programming are also great, as I can attest, and look forward to working with more clients as we develop a "branding in the round" strategy. http://www.pookyamsterdam.com/2009/07/5-reasons-to-use-second-life-as-media.html
Excellent piece, thank you!

Nice fresh information about a, well, oft-repeated theme. This compliments studies like those from ThinkBalm. showing business are indeed planning on continuing to use virtual worlds, and primarily for learning and training. From my seat I see a lot of businesses pulling their virtual worlds behind their firewall unless they have a very specific reason (one that makes them money) for being externally facing. I think we will see more of the big corporate players continue to reduce their external virtual worlds presence in favor of their walled-gardens, whatever the implications.
