Nokia Buys Plum…Yawn!

After the Titanic hit an iceberg and started to sink, some of its passengers sat on the deck, playing cards — giving birth to the phrase “rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.” That’s precisely the image that came to mind when I heard that Nokia was buying an almost forgotten browser-plugin-turned-social-something called Plum for an undisclosed amount of money. Apparently it’s going to do something with Plum’s technology that makes web sites social. Plum’s team is going to work for Nokia. Yesterday, at our Mobilize 09 conference, industry insiders were using the Titanic analogy when referring to the Finnish handset maker, which is losing out to newer, more web-centric rivals such as RIM, Apple and Google.
