Online video publisher Brightcove is extending its reach to the television through a new partnership with open-source media center Boxee. The deal announced today will allow Brightove customers to create their own branded content channel within Boxee, which creates a 10-foot media browsing experience for laptop or PC-connected TVs.
This first batch of Brightcove customers hopping on the Boxee bandwagon will include Conde Nast Digital, Qubo and TheStreet.com. Conde Nast announced in August that it would be feeding content from Wired.com and Style.com to the Boxee platform.
This arrangement allows Brightcove customers to create and control the look and feel of their own channel on Boxee as well as keep their ad placements. Boxee is not even taking a cut of the ad revenue, reports paidContent.
Boxee has had a content-filled year, adding partners such as Magnify.net, Major League Baseball, Current and blip.tv. Boxee raised $6 million in August to add content partners and port the platform over to consumer electronics devices.
Avner Ronen, Boxee’s CEO, will be speaking at our upcoming NewTeeVee Live conference in November where we’ll be grilling him on content partners, set-top boxes and much more. Early bird discount tickets are on sale now!
Hi,
I’m wondering, in the future as more and more of these services/UI’s become available and commoditised, and many content providers enable their programming to be available as the long tail, what will be the point of Tivo – When the consumer can just bypass any vested interests with their grand plans, and many of the content providers are happy to serve consumers the way they want it.
In an avalanche of content, the distributor gains power and the chess pieces of established players are thrown into the air…………
Kind regards,
Shakir Razak
